Five Tips for Decorating a Small Space After Downsizing

Rightsize your furniture.
It’s important you only bring furniture that’ll comfortably fit in your new space.

When downsizing, taking al your furniture with you is one of the biggest mistakes people make. Fortunately, most furniture manufacturers have responded to senior spacing needs by rightsizing their collections for senior apartment homes and smaller floor space. Prioritize your favorite furniture pieces, know your measurements, and keep your new home’s dimensions in mind when shopping for new pieces.

1. Add a little green.

Would you like to add a little green to your area but you don’t have the space for planters or pots? On a windowsill, arrange a fiddle-leaf fig or a succulent tray to soak up the sun and provide a splash of brightness. Natural light and regular water are needed for the fiddle-leaf fig, while plants like succulents and lithops need relatively little care.

2.Hang wall art.

Decorative pieces of artwork function beautifully as the focal point of a small space, helping rooms to feel larger. They also anchor other items in a room and tie colors together. You can also use signs, paintings, photographs, posters, mirrors and tapestries, or whatever makes you feel most at home.

3. Use corners and nooks.

With an oversized plant and a comfy chair, you can create the perfect nook for lounging, reading or daydreaming. There is no need to worry about not being able to display heirlooms, knickknacks or prized possessions. A floating corner shelf is the perfect place to keep these nearby in your new home. In another corner, maybe right next to your favorite reading chair or couch, you can place decorative crates or bins to hold books, games, or arts and crafts.

4. Find a grounding base for each room.

Rugs and throws act as grounding elements in a room. A neutral rug in a subdued pattern can tie everything together if items in the room feature different patterns, colors or textures. This is also a fun opportunity to go shopping and pair something new with your old favorites.
