Senior living is changing to create and innovate interesting programming, amenities and events that embrace holistic wellness and spark inspiration. At The Overlook, we’re proud to support a community culture that values and nurtures the interests of those who call this 450-acre campus their home. Each day, we challenge the status quo for senior living in Massachusetts through engaging and inspiring resident activities.
Many members of the community at The Overlook have started their own groups and organizations as well, and they have found others in the community who share their passions. By starting groups, people living at The Overlook often find new friendships and can embrace their interests in new and exciting ways.
The following examples are just a small sample of the exciting and engaging programs and events that we offer here at The Overlook.
The Brew Crew
One of our most popular resident organizations is the Brew Crew, a group that brews craft beer right here on campus. The group boasting more than 35 members creates delicious beers – all from scratch – in The Overlook’s small brewery. From grinding the grain all the way to bottling, the Brew Crew does it all on-site. Residents even design and produce their own artwork for the labels.
The Brew Crew, which calls its brand “Senior Moment,” have brewed many different kinds of beers, including an Irish red ale, a white IPA, an oatmeal stout, an American wheat beer and many others. Steve Dragon, a resident at The Overlook and passionate home brewer, started the group and chose The Overlook because it was the only community that would support him in continuing his hobby. Steve found that he wasn’t the only one at The Overlook who was passionate about brewing beer, and now he shares his love of beer with many friends and neighbors.
Weekly live music
The Overlook is a significant supporter of the arts and hosts live music several times a month for both residents and the general public. Just this past summer, The Overlook hosted a summer concert series featuring six different musical groups each Tuesday night for six weeks. Residents, staff and the greater Charlton community of all ages gathered to enjoy good tunes, beautiful views and the warm summer evenings.
Musical performances that are just for residents also occur at The Overlook. About twice a week, a musical act takes the stage. Musical styles range widely, from classical to rock, and groups come to perform from all over the country.
The mushroom grower
Brad Allain is a local mushroom grower and heads up Wildwood Mushrooms, a small gourmet mushroom business. He grows exotic mushrooms in highly controlled environments for local, high-end restaurants and for use by the dining services team at The Overlook. Brad has taken over a parcel of land at The Overlook to work with residents to grow a mushroom called Lions Mane, a plant with natural properties known to promote cognitive health. Gardening is a large part of the community culture here at The Overlook, so it was a natural fit for Brad and his hand-harvested mushrooms to join in!
These are just some of the ways that we’re changing the status quo for senior living in Massachusetts. Through our events and activities, we’re moving toward a culture of vibrancy and distinction that sets us apart from the rest.
