Situated south of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard is an island known for its stunning beaches and luxury living. However, it is also a popular summertime destination for many who live in Massachusetts and the surrounding states. If you’ve never experienced Martha’s Vineyard for yourself, it is certainly something to consider! A weekend trip to this lovely destination with your closest family and friends is a great way to enjoy some well-deserved rest and relaxation. Not sure what to do while you’re there? We’ve got some great ideas to get you started.
1. Relax on the Many Beaches
Martha’s Vineyard is perhaps best known for its beautiful, sunny beaches. If you’re visiting during the summer, this is definitely something you’ll want to check off your list. With so many beaches to choose from, you can’t really go wrong—though a few of the most highly regarded options include South Beach, East Beach and Lobsterville Beach. Specifically, the latter is a wonderful option for those who may be bringing children in tow, as the waters here tend to be a little more gentle and forgiving for young swimmers. Most of the beaches on Martha’s Vineyard are also staffed with lifeguards during regular hours.
You could easily spend a few hours or even the majority of a day on any of the wonderful beaches on Martha’s Vineyard. Consider making a day of it by packing a picnic lunch and some lounging chairs. What more relaxing way to pass the day than by enjoying some time camped out with a good book underneath a beach umbrella and a gentle breeze blowing through your hair?
2. Take a Ride on the Flying Horses Carousel
If you want to immerse yourself in a little bit of fun local history, you may also want to check out the Flying Horses Carousel, which is located in Oak Bluffs. This historic carousel has been in operation since 1876, making it the oldest platform carousel in the United States that is still in operation. For just $2.50 per person, you can enjoy a relaxing, smooth ride on a piece of history. This is also a great place to bring younger family members, as kids have a fun time trying to catch the brass ring from the ring dispenser as the carousel makes its slow rotation. In fact, if you’re one of the lucky few to catch a brass ring during your ride, you’ll win an additional ride free of charge!
There aren’t many of these carousels in operation anymore, so this is a great destination for those who enjoy taking a step back in time and admiring the preservation efforts made to keep this attraction open. The carousel itself is also located inside a barn, so you can enjoy it rain-or-shine.
3. Go Shopping on Circuit Avenue
Interested in a day of shopping and dining? Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs is the place to be. Circuit Avenue is actually located near the Flying Horses Carousel, making this a great pairing to consider for a full day of fun. Specifically, Circuit Avenue is known for its many eclectic shops, where you can find one-of-a-kind trinkets and souvenirs. There are also some great local restaurants along this strip, including a home-made ice cream parlor. This is a must-visit for those who want to do some shopping while avoiding the “typical” chain stores and tourist traps. If you’re interested in checking out Circuit Avenue for yourself, there are many Martha’s Vineyard tours available that will take you here and allow you to spend a few hours exploring.
4. Check out Edgartown Lighthouse
There is no shortage of lighthouses on Martha’s Vineyard, but Edgartown Lighthouse is one of the most popular destinations. This lighthouse is located on the north side of the island and is unique in the sense that it was actually relocated. Originally, it stood in Ipswich, Massachusetts in the 1800s, but was relocated to Martha’s Vineyard back in 1938. Today, visitors love the view from the top of the lighthouse, where you can see the area harbor and even parts of Chappaquiddick Island. Admission to explore the lighthouse itself is just $5, and you can enjoy walking around the grounds and beach outside the lighthouse free of charge. If you’re only able to see a handful of lighthouses during your trip to Martha’s Vineyard, make sure this is one of them. You will not be disappointed.
