Time shared with grandchildren is always special, no matter the activity. In honor of Grandparents Day on Sept. 11, we thought you might like to plan a special activity or two with the apple of your eye. In the Worcester area, there are plenty of activities that will be fun for you and for your grandchild. Here are a few of our favorites.

grandfather-grandchildDiscover Farm Life

For city slickers, a day on the farm can provide a great way for kids to learn about a very different lifestyle. Davis Farmland is known as the “ultimate children’s discovery farm” and includes the largest sanctuary for endangered farm animals in North America.

Located about 20 minutes from Worcester in Sterling, this farm features all kinds of activities to delight kids, including the Water Spraypark, Adventureland, Imagine-Acres, MooTown USA and the MegaMaze.

Catch a Worcester Bravehearts Game

If you and your grandchild love heading out to the ballpark, you definitely should make time to take in a Worcester Bravehearts game. The team plays at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field, which was built in 1905 and holds 3,000 baseball fans.

If you’re into baseball history, you may like knowing that greats Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth and Ted Williams all played games at the field. And Fitton Field offers plenty of activities for kids, including on-field contests, playing in the Kids Zone, running through the outfield during the game and spending time with Jake the Mascot.

Experience Living History

Just a 25-minute drive from Worcester is Old Sturbridge Village, where you and your grandchild can experience history in action. The 200-acre village depicts rural life in the 1800s and features antique buildings, mills powered by water, a working farm and plenty of historians in costume. You and your grandchild can participate in hands-on crafts and other fun activities.

Connect with Science

If you and your grandchild are interested in science, you’ll love the Ecotarium. This indoor-outdoor museum lets you walk through treetops, encounter wildlife, explore nature trails and enjoy a multimedia tour of the galaxy. You also can ride a replica steam locomotive and experience a variety of interactive exhibits.

Spend the Day in Boston

You’ll find plenty to do right here in Worcester, but seeing the sights in Boston is another great way to spend a day — or several! If it’s your first time visiting the city, we recommend seeing the main attractions like the Freedom Trail, catching a Red Sox game at Fenway Park and visiting the Museum of Fine Arts. You can get a lot accomplished in a day, because the top attractions are in the city center near public transportation and great restaurants.
